Around 4,000 people marched through the streets of Brisbane on April 28 to call for action on gendered violence. Instead, law enforcement relied on the gunman’s family to keep guns from him after they tried without success to talk to the reservist. Sheriff Joel Merry told CNN on Saturday law enforcement officers weren’t able to make contact with Card during two visits. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies saying they were trying to locate Card. The fact law enforcement in Maine didn’t utilize the yellow flag law in Card’s case could point to its shortcomings, Rocque said.

Marshals have for the first time released data on how many people were shot by their officers or other police working with them. Marshals Service Director Ronald Davis ordered the review last year, saying it reflects the seriousness of shots fired by officers. The report does not include information on whether the shootings were deemed legally justified nor data on more recent shootings, though it does say that those outlined in the report were independently investigated. The aim was to study policies, training, tactics and equipment to figure out ways to make shootings less likely or destructive in the future, the report released Tuesday states. London CNN —Oxford was the murder capital of late-medieval England, with the city’s male university population being the main catalyst for violence, according to new research. “It wasn’t surprising, it was what I expected,” Professor Manuel Eisner, lead murder map investigator and director of the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology, told CNN. Even so, violent crime is still considerably higher than just before the pandemic, the benchmark that police chiefs and city leaders are striving to return to, as cities remain awash in guns. In the new report, the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice examined crime data from 30 U.S. cities — including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Denver — and found that through the first half of the year there were 202 fewer homicides, a drop of more than 9 percent. Still, homicides across those cities are 24 percent higher than in same period of 2019. “I would call the result heartening,” said Richard Rosenfeld, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Missouri-St. Louis who was the lead author of the report. Most cities have not returned to the homicide levels that were prevailing just prior to the height of the pandemic.

A mass shooting on Wednesday, in which eight students and a security guard were killed at a school in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, was a reminder that such attacks are far less common outside the United States. Serbs are known to have stockpiles of weapons left over from the Balkan wars of the 1990s, and there have been other mass shootings in the country. In 2013, a veteran of the Balkan wars shot and killed 13 people in a village near Belgrade. In 2007, a man fatally shot nine people in the village of Jabukovac, in eastern Serbia. The study found that among countries with more than 10 million people only Yemen had a higher rate of mass shootings per capita.
